Farewell, Al Rosenberg

If you’re lucky in your life, you might meet someone who is simply funny, kind, and truly wonderful, who apparently LIVES to make people happy around him, and does so absolutely selflessly and with great joy. I knew such a man. Al Rosenberg. He passed yesterday, June 27, 2023, and my heart is broken. Professionally, Al had a long and varied career. I became aware of him when he was writing for the Howard Stern show, and then later Howard’s Channel 9 TV show, but I really got to appreciate him on the original Miserable Men radio show that aired on SiriusXM Channel 101 for five years.

He was quick, funny, able to be the brunt of a joke and could dish it out, too. Through it all, he was a genuine and thoroughly wonderful human being. He cared and appreciated EVERYONE in his life so much, and through that, he made you feel better about yourself. I hope I can be half the mensch Al was. I will miss him and his wit and charm deeply. My heart goes out to his family as they grieve the loss of this great man. May he rest easy.

Miserable Men Are Back!

After over 10 years, the Miserable Men are back on Patreon! There are two tiers right now. For a measly $5/month you can get access to commercial free and live shows. For $10/month, add in archived shows, bonus materials and the Monday Miserable Meeting, where you get to see some behind the scenes shenanigans as Shuli, Bob, Mike, Mark and new addition Brent Hatley plan the show for the week.

This is a long time coming. Help make the show a success by signing on here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/50996581 (Note: the Miserable Replay site will NOT be archiving the new shows. The only way to get the archives for the new show is through the MM Patreon)

15 Years!

It’s been 15 years since Miserable Men made it’s debut on Sirius Satellite Radio, and a lot has changed! Bob Levy and Chrissy split. Al Rosenberg continues to be the beloved and respected man he always was, a tribute to his talent and character. Both Bob and Al are on Facebook. Host Shuli has recently moved to Huntsville, Alabama with his family, and has left the Stern Show on good terms to work full-time on his own deal from down there. You can join his Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/TheShuliShow or just subscribe to his podcast wherever you get your podcasts from. There’s also a chance that Shuli will be having Mike and Mark (and maybe even Levy) on for a mini-reunion show at some point.

Mike’s teetering marriage also resulted in divorce, but he certainly hasn’t lost his sense of humor. You can contact him to do funny things for you via his web page at http://writefunny.net/. Mark Byrnes is still one of the most talented people I know, whether it’s comedy or music, but with the Vid over the past year, there hasn’t been a lot of opportunities to play out. You can reach him via his Facebook page, where he’s posted some online concerts for charity.

Happy Holidays, you miserable bastids! I come bearing presents, specifically, the last three shows I haven’t posted yet! There are still some things I would like to do with this site, aside from hosting the archives, including sharing a bunch of terrific art made by MM superfan and contributor Andy from Ontario, maybe over the holidays while I have some extra free time to put it together. Also, if you would like to contribute or upgrade a show summary, just email me at pete@miserablereplay.com.

We don’t get a lot of traffic here, so please reach out on Facebook, Twitter and anywhere else Miserable Men fans might be, and make sure they know they have access to ALL OF THE SHOWS right here on the Miserable Replay! I’d love to see more people enjoying the show. Talk with you soon!

Goodbye, Faceplace!

Phase 2 of my miserable plan is complete: I’ve left Facebook. I still have Messenger running for the moment, but I don’t know how long that will last. If you want to get in touch with me for any reason (especially if there’s a bad file or you have a show we’re missing here and you’d like to share), feel free to email me at the address on the Contact page. Regarding shows that are missing, I do have more to upload, but I’m trying to get the show summaries done first for the 2006 shows, and I don’t have unlimited free time (EDIT: these are DONE!). Please be patient, and I’ll post here when I add new shows. Until then, stay safe and enjoy the site!

2006 shows!

Thanks to fellow Superfan Eric, we now have the 2006 shows, including the very FIRST Miserable Men show, originally broadcast on February 14, 2006 (Valentine’s Day). In addition to these 22 shows, Eric has found another 19 or so that were missing from my catalog and has provided them to me to share with everyone here on the Miserable Replay. I’ll do that very soon, but I just couldn’t wait to get these first 22 gems up for you to enjoy! THANK YOU, ERIC! As Ferrall would say, YOUDAMAN!!! Check out the new shows in the new section in Episodes.

Welcome!

In the beginning, we were happy. Well, at least we were soon after that “squirting out of our mother’s vagina” part, followed by a flood of blood and goo. Most of us had a good cry then, too, perhaps a vision of things to come. Maybe we peed on the doctor and nurses. But for the next several years, life was good! We spit up whenever and wherever we wanted, didn’t have to worry about food. Many of us were introduced to boobies right out of the gate! We could pee and poop on demand, and didn’t even have to wipe ourselves! Not a worry in the world when it was just us, Mom, Dad and maybe a doting brother or sister or two. And BOY were we cute!

But then we met other people. Kids from the neighborhood. Kids at school. Teachers. Other adults. We feel in lust and in love, and got our hearts broken. And just like that, life got complicated and, in many cases, MISERABLE!

Fortunately for us, in 2006 we were introduced to the Miserable Men. Shuli Egar, Bob Levy and Jim Florentine were on Sirius Satellite Radio in the beginning, produced by “Miserable Chick” Rachel, picking on callers and each other, and making us forget that our lives, too, were miserable. We could laugh at Bob Levy not being able to pronounce words, or Jim’s stories of pulling trains or upper-deckers.

Jim left the show at the end of 2007, but it just got better and better with the addition of Mike Morse, the legendary Al Rosenberg and the voice of the callers, Mark “From Jersey City” Byrnes. Together with a great behind the scenes team that included Raven, Teddy, Ragu, Paul and others, the “Fab Five” (sorry, Queer Eye, we were first!) created radio gold. They were lightning in a bottle, always deserving of a regular nightly slot, but never getting there.

Eventually, Al left and then Bob burned his bridge as only he can do, but even then Shuli, Mike and Mark carried the show on their backs until February 2011, when Shuli finally decided enough was enough, and he just couldn’t justify the time and effort it took away from his family and professional life anymore. And just like that, Miserable Men was gone.

We the fans gathered on Facebook for a number of years, and at some point several years ago I started posting a show a week from my personal archive for anyone who wanted to download and listen. Turned out that a lot of the fans were still around, and the shows really held up well! I went through the entire cycle of 2007-2011 once, and started it again.

I decided I wanted to get off Facebook, because (frankly) I was sick and tired of it, and I’m no fan of the company or the CEO. To do this without abandoning the show fans, though, I’d have to figure out something for all of us. This site, the Miserable Replay, is the result.

Here, you can play or download ANY of the shows from my archive, any time you want. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 365 days a year. Just go to the Episodes section of the site, find the date range of the show you want to listen to, pick a show and use the built-in player. (BTW, you can rapidly scroll through the show by moving the vertical line in the player left and right. It’s a good player, but that part isn’t so intuitive).

One BIG disclaimer: I am hoping that SiriusXM allows us to keep this site online. They have absolutely NOTHING to do with me or it, and haven’t broadcast the show since it went off the air back in early 2011, but THEY own the show, and if they direct me to take the site down, I will have no choice but to do so. I love SiriusXM, and I’ve been a subscriber since 1-9-06, and I will not argue with them if they would rather these shows not be available online. I only offer what are mostly my own personal recordings of the show simply out of the love I have for it, and wanting to share it again with fellow fans.

One last thing: if there’s a bad file, you have suggestions, or you have shows I am missing (not Best Of replay shows) and are willing to share, please email me (address is on the Contact page). Enjoy the Miserable Replay!
